Overview - Jump start a stalled project by engaging research directors of clinical psychology to design a new digital product that integrates administered tests, scores and psychometrics that recommends intervention plans for identifying potential
learning disabilities.
My Role - Lead requirements focus group with research content groups. Become subject matter expert on associated learning disabilities that will be represented within the design and scope. Paper prototype. Engage feedback while traveling to remote sites for user interviews. UX design. Communicate. Prototype build. Annotate. Sell it.
Challenge - Plenty of research on core learning disabilities. Serious. Serious, hardcore research. Design a new application feature to enhance the current system and make
it successful.
Approach - Research first. Paper prototype. Wireframe. User feedback. Record everything and track and present findings.
Discovery - Traveling offsite to area practitioners was an adventure. Seeing how they would interact with my wireframe and respond to my script was engaging...and really invaluable. Think about it. Watching someone use your software candidly before it is produced. I packed up my laptop in the El Camino and drove to schools to interview psychologists. I watched them use my prototype. That knowledge was gold. Plus, I fostered valuable client relationships with a great group of users.
Vision - Think down every path. Always have a solid test plan. Push the envelope.
Requirements - Review earlier research and distill a design direction. Familiarize yourself with white papers and research regarding children’s learning disabilities. Engage content from research directors. Integrate into current product.
Framework - Research first. Paper prototype. Wireframe. Gather feedback. Let that feedback drive final design.
Design - I sketch a lot. Then there was paper cut up into prototype. Wireframe. Then design with the understanding that there would be final hand off to Visual Design.
Refinement - The color scheme! We pushed the envelope, and ushered in an evolution to the color palette. Visual design really put the project’s design over the top. No lie. It’s in magazines somewhere.
Impact - Currently in production. As well, a second application is in design to work in conjunction with this feature. A big building block. Pretty cool.
While working with senior research directors, quickly assembled the pieces that were combined to yield an accurate assessment for the user.
Users gather results and observations to build a comprehensive report and recommendation output.
Because of the complexity and the amount of data being integrated, feedback dictated we needed a clear indicator of progress.
